What is a Passe-partout?

A Passe-partout [paspaʀtu], french passer ‘go through’ and partout ‘everywhere’) in art refers to a paper or cardboard frame for photos, graphics and paintings. Also engravings and watercolours etc. are emphasized by passepartouts particularly effectively.

With the multiple passe-partout, several passe-partouts are laid on top of each other in colour coordination in order to increase the depth effect.

Passepartouts and frames can thus form a harmonious unit or a deliberate contrast. Colours that appear in the picture can be repeated by passepartouts in the corresponding colour and thus form the bridge between picture and frame.
